This postcard has been dated by using knowledge of the shelter house that is shown in the image. That shelter was built in 1938, and expanded in 1939. This postcard is a winter image that shows the original version of the shelter house before the expansion, and can only be from the winter of 1938-1939.

Comments & Discussion

Cars can be seen in this postcard lining Highway 40 over the top of the pass while skiers descend down both sides. The Berthoud Pass Ski Area had its first rope tow added in 1937, approx. one year before this image was captured. This was a popular spot for recreation as well as racing at the time.

Condition, Aging & Authenticity: There is some mild damage to all of the corners and a small, but easily visible stain on the back. The surface still has some glossiness, but tiny cracking and spidering of the surface can be seen evenly throughout most of the front.
