Image Dating Comments
The image on this slide was most likely captured in 1951. It was certainly captured before 1954.
This slide can be roughly dated based on the graffiti that is shown here. The ‘VC’ graffiti was not visible in this photo from March in 1951. It is seen relatively fresh in the spring of 1952, but some parts appear slightly more faded than in this image.
The sale listing labeled this as a 1951 slide, but the seller did not respond to inquiries about how they came up with that date.
The shelter house shown behind the sign was there until about 1954.
Front & Back
Comments & Discussion
The boulder and plaque from 1929 are located to the left, just out of frame. This sign would be repainted in 1954, and replaced by 1956.
The vehicle on the right can be identified as a Ford Custom from sometime between 1949-1951.
Lift tickets for the chairlift across the road could be purchased inside of the shelter house behind this sign. The roof of the Berthoud Pass Lodge can be seen rising up behind that building in the background. That lodge opened in 1949.
Condition, Aging & Authenticity: There is no obvious damage to the film or slide mount. There is only very slight fading of the red border on the back.
