Image Dating Comments

The tunnel opened in 1973. The closing page mentions that the grand opening date had passed in March, so this booklet was likely compiled and published shortly afterwards. It is possible it was not published until 1974 or later. The opening of the second tunnel (1979) is not mentioned.

Comments & Discussion

The Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel consists of two tunnel bores: one heading east, and the other heading west. The Eisenhower Tunnel was the first of the pair to open. It was one lane in each direction until the second tunnel was completed in 1979. The image below comes from a slide in the Coloradotopia Archives Collection, and it shows the tunnel in 1975 when it was still a two-lane road.
